School

School

Saminay is fully accredited by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education.  We provide students with a full secondary curriculum taught by professionals trained in their respective fields.

Many of our students are the first in their families to graduate with a secondary diploma.

87 students have graduated after completing the 6 year program.

Congratulations!

Our goal is to provide hands on learning opportunities where the needs of the whole child is met enabling them to  pursue their life goals.

Academics

Remediation

Many students entering Saminay lack the basic skills needed for the secondary curriculum.  Our dedicated teachers work to help them catch up and prepare them for more advanced study.

Goal Setting

Creating and completing personal goals is a unique component of our educational program. This skill is essential for students coming from a background of generational poverty.

LANGUAGES

Subjects are taught in Spanish English and Kichwa. Students come from communities with distinct cultural customs and their own language.  The school is fully accredited from the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education.

Counseling

The home life of students is often very complex and causes some students to have difficulty concentrating on their school work.   Individualized support is available to meet unique  student needs.

Farming

Farming is a vital component of our school.  The property is similar in composition to the small farms our students come from and provides an ideal laboratory for our students to learn how to face the environmental and farming challenges and successfully raise animals in a healthy and ethical manner.  Students are actively involved in growing crops and raising animals.

Nutrition

Malnutrition is a major problem in villages and significantly affects learning and motivation for students.  We provide two meals for students each day, a small breakfast and a well balanced noon day meal.

A contribution is made by parents to help with  food costs.

the Challenge of getting to school

Saminay students come from 15 different communities.  Some of the villages are 7 or more miles away.  Students walk or pick up rides on passing trucks.  It is a very long day traveling back and forth.

“To get myself to school I get up at four in the morning, bathe, change and leave without breakfast because they give us breakfast and lunch which are very delicious and nutritious and aids in our growth.”  Widdison Fuerez
